“I have had the pleasure of working with Ordbalans since 2004. I need only say that Åsa delivers! She has an unerring feel for language, always makes valuable comments and has the ability to make a text sing.”

– Anna Hermerén, Analogica AB

“Åsa at Ordbalans read through my manuscript for the book ‘Förstå Ridning’ (Understanding Riding) in a both professional and personal manner. She supplied constructive criticism and suggested changes that made some of the book easier to understand. It was easy to understand her arguments and corrections. It seemed to me that she familiarised herself with the text and really analysed the content. The book has been well received by readers and this is in part due to Åsa.”

– Helena Åhlund, author and riding instructor

Winter 2015: Review of the Riksbank’s Monetary Policy (Utvärdering av Riksbankens penningpolitik 2010–2015) by Marvin Goodfriend and Mervyn King.

Task: Translation from English into Swedish.

This task was extremely enjoyable as I had the opportunity to work with two highly skilled colleagues. We translated roughly a third each and revised and proofread each other’s sections, ensuring that the end product was thoroughly polished and consistent.

Spring 2016: Interview with Yanis Varoufakis for International Network of Street Papers

Task: Translation from English into Swedish.

As a volunteer with Translators Without Borders, one of my tasks was to translate an interview with the former Greek Minister of Finance, Yanis Varoufakis. I enjoyed being able to make a professional contribution in this way. The interview was also highly interesting and topical.

Summer 2016: Bokförlaget Modellrallaren, Mälarviken–Mollsjö järnvägar (Mälarviken–Mollsjö Railways)

Task: Revision and proofreading in Swedish.

It is always a pleasure to work with Modellrallaren and Jocke Sannagård. I fiddle with the details to enhance the text and see a talented writer improving his skills still further. It is an added bonus to gain an insight into the world of model railways.

Summer 2017: Verbum förlag, Bön och medveten närvaro (Mindfulness and Christian Spirituality, by Tim Stead)

Task: Translation from English to Swedish

Mindfulness has been the thing to do for quite some time now. This book is a nice introduction to the concept, and I think it could be useful to a lot of people, regardless of their beliefs. Tim Stead’s sense of humour and disarming self-distance make the read all the more enjoyable!

I formed Ordbalans in 2009 but I have been working as a translator since 1993. I helped translate EU legislation prior to the accession of Sweden to the EU in 1995. This was an excellent introduction to the translation profession and gave me in-depth knowledge of the EU. Several years as a translator at the EU Commission gave me international experience and broadened my horizons.

Over the years, I have honed my skills and specialised in financial texts, the environment and society. I also like new challenges and finding new fields in which to work. For example, I recently began working with publisher Modellrallaren, revising their texts about model railways and railway history.

I run my own business but that does not mean I am a small player. I have a large network of skilled partners with whom I can work. This allows me to take on large projects as well, drawing on the resources I need.

I want to simplify complex texts

Love of language should be infectious. Reading should be fun. My job is to show respect for both author and reader when I work on a text. Whether I am translating EU reports or revising books about model railways, I am driven by the same desire: to communicate information. If I am able to get across and clarify the author’s language so that the reader can really read and get something out of the text, then I have succeeded.

With roots in Uppland and Lapland, and experience of EU bureaucracy in Brussels, I have learned that there are different ways of looking at things. I like to learn and my clients call me a self-starter. They’re right. I’m also very good at meeting deadlines. With a healthy dose of pragmatism, I am also a natural problem solver.

I like to work in a team, both as project manager and team member. The important thing is for the result to be good.

Words are my business

Your text is my work. My name is Åsa Andersson and I will translate, revise and edit your words to make them say what you want as effectively as possible. You are the expert in your field. What I add is my expertise in language and communication. Together we can produce a document that is attractive to your readers and easy for them to absorb.

I work with English, French and Swedish. My primary specialist fields are the EU, the environment, economics/finance and social issues.

How can I help you today? I can translate your documents from English and French into Swedish. I can revise and edit Swedish texts. I can help you develop your own writing skills.

Translating a text involves more than just transferring words from one language to another. My task as a translator is to put a text in the right context. So I need to ask you about your target group and what you want to achieve with your text. Who will read it and why? During the process, it is important that we communicate so we can deal with any questions as quickly and easily as possible.

You have a text in Swedish that needs a little tweaking. We start by discussing the target group and purpose of the text and agree on what needs to be done. It might only need to be proofread. This means that I correct any spelling mistakes, remove double spaces. That sort of thing. Or you might want a more thorough review. I would then suggest improvements that go a little deeper. The text might need to be rewritten to make it easier to read in Swedish.a?

You want to know what something is called in Swedish. Maybe you need some facts to generate better English translations of your material. I can also suggest how your company might communicate more effectively and uniformly.
